The Foundation's mission is to provide financial support for educational projects, programs, and initiatives that will enhance and enliven the classroom experience and promote excellence in West Hartford Public Schools.
The Foundation raises funds from individuals, businesses, and civic groups in the community as well as alumni nationwide. Gifts of $1,000 or more entitle the donor to honor an individual, business or civic group by having the Foundation name a grant. Once a year, certified teachers throughout the school district are invited to apply for grants ranging from $200 to $3,000 for a project that will enhance student experience, complement the curriculum and demonstrate educational merit. A Foundation committee reviews the applications with the teacher's name and school removed. After approval by the Foundation board, awards are presented in late spring of each year.

Grants Awarded to King Philip Middle School this year:
Dr. Robert and Gladys Dunn Grant: Adventurer in the House!
Joshua Satlof, Lead Teacher & Alisha Mayer, Matt Bannon
This grant will allow seventh graders at King Philip Middle School to get to know and work with Michael Benanav, an author, adventurer, and photographer whose work focuses on nomadic peoples across the world; perhaps most important, Mr. Benanav is a graduate of the West Hartford Public Schools and is a great example of a West Hartford public school education. Mr. Benanav will visit the school and educate students about his work, specifically describing his work in India, which directly aligns to a curriculum standard in the 7th grade. There will be a variety of presentation styles in place with this grant including small-group style lectures and time with students at lunch. Finally, after being a part of this grant, students will be empowered to take action to better the world around them and look for ways to get involved just as their fellow West Hartford-educated adventurer has done.
Heather Congdon Memorial Grant: Move, Breathe, Smile--Connect, Relax and Feel Better

Michael Dauria of Health Education Services will lead a series of workshops for 330 8th-graders at King Philip Middle School on Social Emotional Learning. Dauria uses his National Institutes of Health evidence-based, mind-body activity program to reduce stress, increase awareness, and develop self-control, all of which are linked to increasing success in student learning. Afterward, students will experience improved mood, relaxation, better focus, and improved response to stressors, all of which will lead to improved focus and attention, self-regulating behavior, and a more positive attitude and a willingness to participate and enjoy learning in every subject. These skills will stay with the students through their high school years and beyond.
